Ludhiana, January 27, 2014: Dr Charles B Rosen, Associate Medical Director from Mayo Clinic, USA today delivered a lecture on ‘Liver Transplantation in bile duct cancer’, which in medical term, is known as Cholangiocarcinoma. Dr Rosen is also the Chair of the Division of Transplantation Surgery at Mayo Clinic, Rochester and Professor of Surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

In his address to the audience, Dr Rosen informed that doctors in Mayo Clinic, USA are experienced in treating bile duct cancer, a rare cancer that occurs in the bile duct, with several treatment options. He advised that surgery for bile duct cancer is a complex operation and should be done by an experienced surgeon working at a major medical center whenever possible.

In its Golden Jubilee year, Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana is planning to start liver transplant programme shortly, with the induction of two liver transplant specialists- Dr Suresh Raghavaiah and Dr Hardev Singh Ramandeep S Girn, said Secretary of DMCH Managing Society-Sh Prem Kumar Gupta.

In India, percentage of cadaveric donations i.e. from brain dead patients is extremely poor as compared to other counties of the world. Family members need intense counselling for donating organs from a brain-dead person.

Even for people, who are eligible for a liver transplant, getting a new liver may not be easy as many centers in India and abroad do not accept patients with bile duct cancer into their transplant programs. People needing a transplant must wait until a liver is available, which can take too long for some people with bile duct cancer. One option is having a living donor (often a close relative) give a part of their liver for transplant. Another option is to treat first with chemotherapy and radiation. This is followed by a transplant when a liver becomes available.

People who get a liver transplant have to be given drugs to help suppress their immune system and prevent them from rejecting the new organ. After a liver transplant, regular blood tests are important to check for signs of rejection. Sometimes liver biopsies are also taken to see if rejection is occurring and if the anti-rejection medicines need to be changed.

Dean Academics Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina (Professor of Gastroenterology) said the first human liver transplant was performed in 1963 by a surgical team led by Dr. Thomas Starzl of USA.  According to Dr Chhina, Living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) has emerged in recent decades as a critical surgical option for patients with end stage liver disease, such as cirrhosis and cancerous growth related to either long-term alcohol abuse or long-term untreated hepatitis C & B infection.

Dr Rosen said that any member of the family, parent, sibling, child, spouse or a volunteer can donate their liver. The criteria for a liver donation include: Being in good healt; Having a blood type that matches or is compatible with the recipient's; Having a charitable desire of donation without financial motivation; Being between 18 and 60 years old; Being of similar or bigger size than the recipient and Before one becomes a living donor; the donor must undergo testing to ensure that the individual is physically fit. Sometimes CT scans or MRIs are done to image the liver. In most cases, the work up is done in 2–3 weeks. //ludhiana news online, ludhiana news in English, ludhiana news, ludhiana current news, ludhiana news live, Ludhiana breaking news, Ludhiana headlines, Ludhiana latest news, punjab news, india news, punjab news live, punjab news online, punjab news, punjab news headlines, punjab breaking news, india news, punjab news,
