Great endeavour by ISRO for successful launch of Aditya L1 spacecraft by PSLV rocket

Chandigarh, September 2, 2023: The students, faculty members and staff members of Panjab University Chandigarh applaud the great endeavour by ISRO for the successful launch of Aditya L1 spacecraft by PSLV rocket. This becomes the first Indian mission to  be sent to the  Lagrange L1 point. NASA-ESA had earlier jointly sent a solar space probe SOHO to the Lagrange L1 point. SOHO spacecraft has been in operation since 1995. The Aditya L1 space probe will be introduced in an orbit around the Lagrange L1 point that is around 1.5 million kilometres away from Earth, towards the direction of sun.  This is a technological challenging endeavor and requires several corrections to the probe trajectory. The spacecraft will take around 125 days to reach the destination. The solar probe carries a set of instruments that will continuously monitor the photosphere, chromosphere and Corona of the Sun. The instruments will study the magnetic field activities of the surface of the sun along with the energetic processes that results in solar flares and coronol mass ejection (CME). There are set of instruments that will measure the Solar Energy particles emitted by the sun , the solar plasma and its magnetic field. The essential am of the mission is to study the Physics of the active sun. Further, the mission will try to understand the interaction between the sun and the earth environment for early warning of strong flare activities and CMEs. These activities significantly effect the operation of artifical satellites around the Earth.

Live streaming of the launch was shown at  the Department of Physics, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Our group at Panjab University is involved in the study of the formation and the evolution of the Sun. We have been specifically interested in understanding the processes that led to the formation of the Sun along with the active early energetic phase of the Sun during its initial phases of formation.
