Government action of removing rehri farhies amounts to denial of fundamental right of livelihood: CPI, District Ludhiana

Ludhiana: The communist party of India in a press conference strongly condemn the repression on the poor vendors by removing their Rehri Farhies on the pretext of streamlining the traffic. Over 40000 poor Rehri Farhi walas in the city have come on road and are facing the situation of hunger with no income left. The Parliament enacted a law on 4th March 2014, the Street Vendors Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending Act 2014. It was said that this has to be implemented within one year. According to this vending zones will be created where the vendors will be given place to work. The law also stated that no vendor will be displaced until a survey has been conducted and vending zones created. Also according to Clause 4-18(3) of the act no vendor can be removed without giving a notice of 30 days. According to Clause 2-3 of the act no vendor can be displaced until an alternative place is provided. Taking note of the harassment of the poor people by the administration and the police prevention of harassment of street vendors from police and other authorities in which according to Clause 8 neither police or any other authority can harass or displace the vendors under any existing law. But all this is being violated by the government itself. The police in connivance with the corporation is removing the vendors, breaking their Rehries with JCB and throwing their material and even beating them and registering false cases.

The party demanded that this must stop immediately. The vendor should be allowed to put their Rehries. Action should be taken against the officials indulging in vandalism. The vending zones should be made public. The surveys conducted should be made transparent.

The act should be followed in letter and spirit.  The press conference was addressed by Comrades D P Maur – Secretary, Dr Arun Mitra, Chamkaur Singh, Ramesh Rattan, M S Bhatia, Kameshwar Yadav and others. /(Feb 14)
