Goa polls: Congress announces 6-member Alliance Committee headed by Manikrao Thakare
The Congress party on Monday announced a six-member committee for Goa to coordinate seat adjustment and poll strategy with its alliance partners as the state gears up for the Assembly election early next year.

New Delhi, Aug 3 (IANS) The Congress party on Monday announced a six-member committee for Goa to coordinate seat adjustment and poll strategy with its alliance partners as the state gears up for the Assembly election early next year.
The Congress Alliance Committee comprises Girish Chodankar, Yuri Alemao, Anjali Nimbalkar, Capt. Viriato Fernandes, M.K Shaikh, with Manikrao Thakare named as its chairman.
The Goa Assembly comprises 40 members, where Assembly elections were last held on February 14, 2022, and results were declared on March 10. In the last state election, the Congress could manage only 11 seats – six less than what it could gather in the previous 2017 poll – with close to 26 per cent of popular votes polled and found valid in 2022. Its then alliance partner, the Goa Forward Party, could win only one of the three seats it contested.
Interestingly, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Trinamool Congress too had participated in 2022 but did not ally with either the Congress or each other. While the former won two of the 39 seats it put up candidates, the Trinamool failed to secure a single seat out of the 26 it contested.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) went on to form the government, winning 20 seats on its own, bagging over 33 per cent of valid votes polled, while adding seven more to its earlier tally.
Despite winning more seats in 2017, the Congress could not muster a majority. The BJP forged an alliance with Goa Forward Party and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and formed a government in the state. Manohar Parrikar then became the Chief Minister. Following his death, Pramod Sawant took the oath of office and secrecy in his place.
