GHSC-10 Organises Legal, Health Awareness and Community Outreach Activities on Fifth Day of Special NSS Camp
The fifth day of the ongoing Seven Days Special NSS Camp at Government Home Science College, Chandigarh commenced with an insightful session on Legal Provisions for Women on Tuesday.
Chandigarh, January 28, 2026: The fifth day of the ongoing Seven Days Special NSS Camp at Government Home Science College, Chandigarh commenced with an insightful session on Legal Provisions for Women on Tuesday. The session was delivered by Madhu P. Singh, Former President, District Consumer Commission, Mohali. Currently serving as a practising Advocate and Arbitrator at the Punjab & Haryana High Court, Chandigarh. Singh is also a proud alumna of the college. Renowned for her extensive work in the field of gender justice and women’s rights, she delivered an informative, thought-provoking and empowering lecture. The session aimed to deepen the volunteers’ understanding of the various legal provisions enacted for the protection and welfare of women in India.
This was followed by a session on Awareness on Cervical Cancer and Its Preventive Measures by Vandana Sharma, Programme Officer, Family Planning Association of India, Sector-4, Panchkula. She educated the volunteers about the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), its causes, modes of transmission and common symptoms. Emphasising the importance of early detection, she encouraged regular annual health check-ups and highlighted the significance of personal hygiene. Sharma also stressed the role of a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise and balanced nutrition in preventing lifestyle diseases while advising against high-risk behaviours.
The final session of the day was conducted by Amanat, General Secretary, Saksham Prakriti Welfare Society, Chandigarh, focusing on Gender Sensitisation and LGBTQIA+ Awareness. Volunteers were encouraged to respect individual identities, avoid judgement based on appearance and acknowledge preferred pronouns. The session elaborated on various identities within the LGBTQIA+ spectrum including lesbian, gay, transgender and intersex persons, fostering inclusivity, empathy and mutual respect.
The day concluded with community outreach visits to Dainik Bhaskar Colony, Sector-25, Chandigarh and Bapu Dham Colony, Sector-26, Chandigarh. NSS volunteers sensitised the general public by sharing key learnings from the sessions, particularly regarding legal provisions for women and preventive measures to reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Volunteers also organised cleanliness drive across the respective areas.
Principal of the College, Prof. Sudha Katyal, appreciated the commitment and enthusiasm of the NSS wing. She remarked that such programmes not only enhance students’ awareness but also instil values of compassion, equality and social responsibility which are essential for holistic development.
