GHSC-10 Observes Poshan Maah 2026 with Awareness Programme on Food Hygiene Practices

Chandigarh, September 17, 2026: Government Home Science College, Sector-10, Chandigarh, organised an awareness programme on “Food Hygiene Practices” on 14 September as part of the 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026. The programme was aimed at sensitising students about the importance of food hygiene, safe food handling and healthy food practices for ensuring better nutrition and overall well-being.

The programme highlighted that good nutrition is closely linked with food safety and hygiene and that hygienic food practices play an essential role in preventing food-borne illnesses and promoting healthy living. The session covered important aspects such as cleaning and sanitisation of food-contact surfaces, proper washing of fruits and vegetables, prevention of cross-contamination, safe storage of food and hygienic packing and handling practices.

A practical demonstration of the SUMAN-K safe handwashing technique was conducted to reinforce the importance of proper hand hygiene before handling, preparing and consuming food. Students were also sensitised about precautions to be followed while eating outside or ordering food online, including choosing hygienic food outlets, checking the condition and integrity of food packaging, and ensuring safe handling and delivery of food.
The programme further encouraged students to become responsible and informed consumers by developing the habit of checking food labels, manufacturing and expiry dates, storage instructions and other relevant information before purchasing packaged food products.

Approximately 60 students actively participated in the awareness programme.

The interactive session and practical demonstration provided students with hands-on understanding of simple yet essential food hygiene measures that can be incorporated into their everyday lives. The programme also reinforced the broader message of “Humari Aanganwadi, Humari Zimmedari”, emphasising that ensuring safe, nutritious and hygienic food is a shared responsibility of individuals, families and the community.

The programme was appreciated by the Principal of the college, Prof. Sudha Katyal, who acknowledged the enthusiastic participation of the students and appreciated the efforts of the Department of Resource Management & Extension in successfully organising the programme. She emphasised the importance of creating awareness among young adults about food safety and healthy practices so that they can contribute towards building healthier families and communities.
