Former Councillor Parminder Mehta Urges Punjab Human Rights Commission to Intervene in Ludhiana Sanitation Crisis

Ludhiana, August 1, 2026: Senior leader and former councillor Parminder Mehta has written to the Punjab Human Rights Commission via email, urging it to intervene and protect human lives from the risk of diseases caused by heaps of garbage accumulating across the city due to the ongoing strike by sanitation workers.
Mehta said that the situation has deteriorated significantly as rainfall has worsened the condition of the garbage lying unattended at various locations. The widespread filth and foul smell have made it difficult for people to sit inside their homes and shops or even move around in many areas. He warned that the unhygienic conditions have considerably increased the risk of the spread of various diseases, posing a serious threat to public health.
He further stated that there appears to be no immediate possibility of a settlement between the Punjab Government and the striking sanitation workers. Therefore, he urged the Punjab Human Rights Commission to take suo motu cognisance of the matter and issue appropriate directions to the Punjab Government to ensure proper sanitation arrangements and facilitate an early resolution of the strike.
