Former CM Hooda alleges BJP of looting farmers by reducing the weight of urea bags

Chandigarh, February 3, 2026: Former Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda expressed deep anger over the continuous exploitation of farmers. He said the central and state governments are adopting new tactics to cheat farmers, and a new formula has been introduced by reducing the weight of urea bags.

Hooda said that earlier, a urea bag weighed 50 kg. Then it was reduced to 45 kg, and now it has been reduced to just 40 kg. The new bag is claimed to contain 37% nitrogen and 17% sulfur, but the price remains the same at Rs 254.  This means the name is the same, the price is the same, but farmers are getting less quantity every year. “The BJP government is continuously working to break the backs of farmers by increasing inflation and the cost of farming,” he said.

He added that the BJP's intentions were clearly visible in the recent Union Budget. “This was perhaps the first budget in the history of India that did not even mention farmers. Nothing was said in the budget about waiving farmers' loans, neither about compensation, nor about Minimum Support Price (MSP),” he pointed out.

“All the policies of the BJP government are continuously weakening farmers financially. They are being looted of crores of Rupees in the name of fertilizers, seeds, and crop insurance. Farmers are already struggling with not getting MSP, rising costs, and natural calamities, and on top of that, the reduction in the weight of urea bags has added to their problems,” he said.
