Follow traffic rules, save lives: MDU VC urges future engineers; Flags off road safety rally

Rohtak, October 13, 2026: Road safety begins with responsible behaviour, and simple precautions can save precious lives, Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Milap Poonia said at a road safety awareness programme on Tuesday.

Organised under the Service Sankalp campaign by the Youth Red Cross and the Civil Engineering Department of the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), the programme marked the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Prof Poonia urged future engineers to follow traffic rules themselves and encourage others to do the same. Wearing helmets, fastening seat belts, adhering to speed limits and avoiding mobile phones while driving are essential measures to reduce road accidents, he said.

Referring to this year’s theme, ‘Resilience Starts at Home’, the Vice Chancellor stressed that disaster risk reduction and safe practices must begin at the individual and family levels. He encouraged students to spread awareness among their families, friends and the wider community.

Prof Poonia also flagged off a road safety awareness rally in the university campus. Students highlighted the importance of helmets, seat belts, traffic signs, zebra crossings and alertness on roads.

MDU Registrar Prof Sandeep Bansal, Dean CDC Prof Rajesh Punia, Dean of Students’ Welfare Prof Sapna Garg, UIET Director Prof Vineet Singla, YRC programme coordinator Prof Anju Dhiman and other faculty members and students attended the programme.
