First of its kind Surgery in North India

Ludhiana, February 27, 2014: Fortis Hospital Ludhiana has established a benchmark in North India by successfully conducting region’s first reported minimally invasive endoscopic procedure named Stretta therapy which has recently been developed in US and approved by their FDA in 2011. The procedure is being launched in India from this month onwards.
It is an outpatient procedure performed in approximately 60 minutes, allowing patients to return to their normal activities, the day after. The Stretta system delivers radiofrequency energy to the lower oesophageal sphincter muscle (near where the stomach meets the oesophagus) which remodels the tissue, resulting in improved barrier function and fewer random relaxations that cause GERD symptoms. Quality of life is dramatically improved after STRETTA and patients are off medication for several years.
What is GERD?
GERD Patients complain of acidity, retrosternal burning, and gas behind chest, associated with “ghabhrahat”,as said in the patient’s language. Such patients usually take multiple tablets without much relief and it tends to affect their quality of life, work performance and interpersonal relationships. They are dependent on medication like omeprazole, rabeprazole etc and have complained of recurrence on missing even a single dose. They are usually long-term takers of these medications but with no or little relief. Normal surgical therapies have inadequate results followed by an added stigma of scar and surgical procedure.
Every patient is di?erent in their response to Stretta Therapy. Some patients see improvement more quickly than others, and studies show the symptoms may continually improve for six months or longer. Patients are advised to continue their previous anti-secretory regimen for two-months after Stretta, and follow a modi?ed diet of full liquids for 24 hours and soft diet for two weeks.
