Fire guts electronics showroom in Ferozepur cantonment, loss runs into lakhs

Ferozepur, August 20, 2026: Panic gripped the busy Cantonment market on Thursday afternoon after a major fire broke out at an electronics showroom, reducing a substantial quantity of electronic goods to ashes. The fire caused a loss of lakhs of rupees, according to preliminary estimates.
The incident took place at the showroom of Sanjeev Sachdeva, who was present at the premises when he noticed smoke emerging from the third floor. Sachdeva said he immediately rushed upstairs and found the floor engulfed in flames.
“After seeing the fire, I sought the help of other shopkeepers and we tried to control it before informing the fire brigade,” he said.
Fire tenders from the Cantonment Board and Municipal Council reached the spot around half an hour after the information was received. Firefighters launched an intensive operation to douse the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to adjoining portions of the building.
The intensity of the blaze was such that the fire tenders had to make several trips to refill their water tanks during the firefighting operation. The incident also drew a large number of people to the spot, causing considerable commotion in the market.
Cantonment police station SHO Sukhbir Singh said the cause of the fire had not yet been established. He said the fire brigade personnel were working to completely extinguish the flames and the exact reason behind the incident would be ascertained subsequently.
Sachdeva said the showroom had a large stock of electronic goods. He said the actual loss could only be assessed after the firefighting operation was completed and the premises could be inspected, though the preliminary assessment indicated damage worth lakhs of rupees.
The incident has also brought back memories of another major fire in the Cantonment area. On July 3, a restaurant had caught fire, in which an employee was charred to death.
