Farmers Hit by Double Failure: Punjab Denies Power, Centre Fails on Fertilizer, Says Dhaliwal

Chandigarh, July 27, 2026: Former IAS officer and MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal expressed deep concern over the deteriorating condition of farmers in Punjab, stating that they are currently being forced to bear a double burden due to the policy failures of both the Punjab Government and the Central Government. On one hand, the Punjab Government claims that the state has a surplus of electricity, yet on the other, it has failed to provide farmers with adequate power supply at the scheduled times required for paddy cultivation. He said that the greatest cost of the governments' negligence is being borne by the country's farmers.
Dhaliwal said that during this crucial phase of the paddy cultivation season, farmers are being forced to wait for hours for electricity. Irregular and inadequate power supply is disrupting irrigation, increasing the risk of a negative impact on crop production. He added that there is a wide gap between the government's claims and the ground reality, and it is the farmers who are paying the price.
He also criticized the Central Government, alleging that it has completely failed to ensure the timely availability of urea and other essential fertilizers to farmers. In many places, farmers are being forced to stand in long queues to obtain fertilizer, while in several areas adequate quantities are simply not available. This, he said, has caused widespread concern and dissatisfaction among farmers.
Dhaliwal urged the Punjab Government to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to farmers according to the announced schedule. He also appealed to the Central Government to immediately ensure the adequate availability of urea and other essential fertilizers. He warned that if effective steps are not taken in time, it will directly affect paddy production and further weaken the financial condition of farmers.
