Wool & Woollens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC) joyously commemorates its 59th Foundation Day in the vibrant city of Ludhiana, a hub for India's woollen industry. The event was presided by Romesh Khajuria, Chairman, WWEPC and graced by the presence of prominent industrialists from the region, adding to the significance of this celebration.

Ludhiana: Wool & Woollens Export Promotion Council (WWEPC) joyously commemorates its 59th Foundation Day in the vibrant city of Ludhiana, a hub for India's woollen industry. The event was presided by Romesh Khajuria, Chairman, WWEPC and graced by the presence of prominent industrialists from the region, adding to the significance of this celebration.

 

Founded on October 6, 1964, WWEPC stands as a tribute to the vision of its founder, Chairman R. K. Birla, and a lineage of esteemed leaders. Notably, the Council has been led by remarkable personalities such as R. K. Singhania, H. R. Dhanda, S. P. Kapoor, U M Patel, K K Aditya, P L Rahi, J L Oswal, and others. Over the past five decades, WWEPC has played a pivotal role in shaping the future of India's woollen sector. WWEPC has worked relentlessly to promote, support, and facilitate the production, manufacturing, and export of high-quality woollen products. WWEPC's initiatives have helped to enhance the competitiveness of Indian wool and woollen products in the global market, boost exports, and create jobs.

 

Romesh Khajuria, Chairman, WWEPC stated that Indian woollen industry has come a long way since the inception of WWEPC. The industry has grown manifold in terms of size, scale, and sophistication. This impressive growth has been possible due to the concerted efforts of the WWEPC and its members. The Council has played a key role in providing support to the industry in areas such as market research, export promotion, and skill development. Khajuria informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi places significant emphasis on our products in export market and believes that every Indian product should have a global presence, thereby encouraging manufacturers whether micro, small or medium sized to venture into the export sector.

 
Khajuria further stated that in fiscal year 2022-23, the export of wool and wool-blended products (excluding woollen carpets and floor coverings) reached a staggering US$ 639.12 million, a notable surge from US$ 561.78 million in FY 2021-22, marking a remarkable 14% growth. The total export of woollen products, including carpets, has soared to an impressive US$ 1.3 Billion, underscoring the industry's significant contribution to the Indian economy. India now proudly exports woollen products to more than 150 countries, showcasing the industry's commitment to globalization and excellence. In today's world, consumers are increasingly seeking eco-friendly and sustainable products, providing India's woollen sector a unique advantage.


WWEPC's regular participation in leading international trade fairs/exhibitions/BSMs/RBSMs is a great way to showcase the strength of Indian woollen products to the global audience. This helps to promote exports of Indian woollen goods and increase brand awareness of Indian woollen products in international markets.


WWEPC's capacity building programmes, workshops, and seminars are also very important. These initiatives help to encourage new entrepreneurs to start their businesses in the woollen sector. This is essential for the long-term growth and sustainability of the Indian woollen industry.

The Foundation Day celebration in Ludhiana was graced by the presence of Sumir Dhir, Vice Chairman. Other prominent industrialists present from the Industry were Harmeet Bhalla, Sandeep Thapar, Harish Dua, Kawaljit Singh, Shivnater Verma, Rajesh Gupta and Bablesh Kumar, further strengthening the ties between WWEPC and the local business community. Sanjay Chawla, Addl. E.D, WWEPC was also present. Their attendance underscores the Council's significance and the collective commitment to the growth and prosperity of the wool and woollen industry in the region. WWEPC's initiatives have significantly enhanced the competitiveness of Indian wool and woollen products in the global market, expanded exports, and created employment opportunities.
