Experts advocate futuristic agricultural marketing coupled with effective risk management mechanism

Chapparchiri/Mohali/Chandigarh, February 18, 2014: Agri-experts from all over the country today underlined the need for futuristic agricultural marketing coupled with effective risk management during a brain storming session on Agricultural Marketing and Risk Management held here under the chairmanship of Dr. B.S.Dhillon, Vice- Chancellor, PAU at Progressive Punjab Agriculture Summit.
Initiating the discussion, the Chairman said that the model of collective marketing and usage of machinery was must for the farming sector to reduce its agri input costs. Making a detailed presentation, Dr. Rameh Chand, Director, National Centre for Agricultural Economics and Policy Research pointed out that during 2004-05 to 2011-12, the higher growth as registered in low productivity states like Chhatisgarh(5.91), Jharkhand(5.76), Rajasthan(5.63) and Madhya Pradesh(5.22) in comparison of Punjab(1.49) as it has been approaching saturation point. He said that Punjab has a massive agri share of 31% in NSDP but its low growth was a worrisome factor. He also pointed out that during 2004-13, the growth rate of crops/products having no MSP have been increased significantly. He said that Fruits (6.04), Vegetables(6.37) and eggs(6.20) growth rate was much higher than crop like Rice(1.99), Wheat(3.60) and Sugarcane(4.01) having effective MSP. He said that growth was must for keeping intact the food security and futuristic marketing was an answer to the challenge. He advised Punjab farmers to retain their innovative thinking besides strengthening their risk management.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sukhpal Singh, PAU advocated for more relief and benefit of subsidies to marginal farmers as 3 lac such farmers were getting just 6% share in subsidies. He also suggested for setting up of Farmers Income Commission. Bhavdeep Sardana of Sukhjit Starch Mills suggests an umbrella certification authority to certify the land and produce of farmers.
On this occasion Sukhmeet Singh, associate director ISB made a presentation on ‘Towards an efficient market with minimal risks: A value chain analysis’.
