Essay writing competition for science inspiration

New Delhi: To inculcate scientific temper amongst students, an essay writing completion with a theme “How to promote science?” was organised in Sant Kirpal Model Senior Secondary School where a strong gathering of more than 300 students of Standard 07th to 09th, participated in the competition and expressed their innovative thoughts on paper.
The Essay Writing competition was organized in line with the ongoing “Vigyan Samagam”, a first-of-its-kind Mega Science exhibition in India, jointly promoted by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Mumbai, Department of Science & Technology (DST), New Delhi along with National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Kolkata. The students were briefed on the theme and objective before the competition.
After going through a huge number of entries, a panel consisting of eminent personalities from the scientific fraternity picked up the winners of the competition. Mansi Sharma, of Std 9th won the first prize, for her thoughts and interesting content. Ashutosh Kumar and Ritu Rana, of Std 7th and 8th respectively, were adjudged as first and second runners up for their exemplary participation.
The Principal of the school Mr Mahavir Pal said that these kind of unique initiatives always encourage students of our school to follow their instincts and interests. Especially with this activity, students know about the nuances of essay writing on science.
The judges too were astonished at the response and appreciated students’ writing abilities. They too enthusiastically interacted with students to understand more about their novel thoughts on science.
The representatives from the organizers of Vigyan Samagam distributed informative material to the students and teachers. The material included hands on information about Vigyan Samagam, the projects displayed at the ongoing exhibition.
Many initiatives and activities are being taken across other schools in Delhi in a phased manner to promote Vigyan Samagam. The key motive of arranging this mega science exhibition is to demonstrate the technical ability and scientific acumen of Indian Scientists in global mega science projects like CERN, LIGO, SKA, TMT, INO, FAIR and ITER.
