Elections for two Rajya Sabha seats in Haryana on March 16th; Former CM’s wife Asha Hooda and former Haryana Minister Manish Grover may be lucky
Elections for two Rajya Sabha seats in Haryana will be held on March 16th. Nominations will be filed by March 5th.
Rohtak, February 18, 2026: Elections for two Rajya Sabha seats in Haryana will be held on March 16th. Nominations will be filed by March 5.
The terms of two BJP Rajya Sabha MPs, Kiran Chaudhary and Ramchandra Jangra, expire on April 9.
On Wednesday, the Election Commission of India issued a notification for 37 Rajya Sabha seats in 10 states. These include two seats of Haryana. The results will be declared in the evening after voting on March 16.
Ramchandra Jangra was elected unopposed as a Rajya Sabha MP in March 2020, will serve a term starting from April 10, 2020, and ending on April 9, 2026. Meanwhile, Kiran Chaudhary was elected unopposed in the Rajya Sabha by-election on August 27, 2024. This seat fell vacant due to Deepender Hooda's resignation after becoming the Lok Sabha MP from Rohtak.
The Haryana Assembly has a total of 90 seats. To win a Rajya Sabha seat, a candidate needs 31 votes. Therefore, it is highly likely that the BJP and Congress will each win one seat. Currently, the BJP has 48 MLAs, while the Congress has 37. The BJP also has the support of three independent MLAs. The BJP can only win the second seat if seven MLAs cross-vote, which seems highly unlikely. However, sources suggest that the BJP has already made arrangements for the second seat.
While the BJP's quota may benefit former minister Manish Kumar Grover, considered a close confidante of Union Minister Manohar Lal, the Congress may also send Asha Hooda, the wife of former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, to the Rajya Sabha. A recent luncheon hosted by the Hooda family for the Gandhi family in Delhi is being linked to this.
