'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam': NDMC V-C Kuljeet Singh Chahal says 40 Sundays of campaign reflect public support

New Delhi, Sep 6 (IANS) New Delhi Municipal Council's (NDMC) Vice President Kuljeet Singh Chahal on Sunday planted trees in collaboration with the Central Government Employees Residential Welfare Association in Raja Bazaar area, marking the 40th successive Sunday under the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign.

Taking inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" campaign, local residents planted trees in honour of their mothers at Multi-Storey Flats Type-4 in DIZ Area's Sector-4 at Raja Bazaar, an official statement said.

Addressing residents, Residential Welfare Association (RWA) officials, children, women and NDMC employees, Chahal said that this campaign, which has been ongoing for 40 consecutive Sundays, is proof that environmental protection is no longer just a government effort but is becoming a sustained campaign involving public participation.

He added that planting a tree is only the beginning, the real responsibility lies in keeping it alive and growing it into a strong tree.

"Plants require regular watering, proper care, and protection. Therefore, the message of 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' should not be limited to planting a tree but should be transformed into a resolution to plant a tree, protect it, and make it a tree," Chahal said.

He added that every tree planted in the name of a mother symbolises both an emotional connection and our responsibility to the environment.

"A tree planted today can provide shade, clean air, greenery, and a better environment in the years to come," he said, appealing to local residents not to consider the trees planted around them merely as a tree planting activity but to take responsibility for them and contribute to their development.

Those present on the occasion included RWA President Dharamveer, General Secretary Manoj Bansal, Treasurer Surendra, senior members Vaibhav Bajaj, Sudhanshu Pandey, Sanjay Kumar Mishra and Krishna Kumar, among others, from the Residential Welfare Association.

During the event, local residents and officials of the Residential Welfare Association also raised various civic issues and demands related to the area with Chahal.

The Residential Welfare Association requested that Multi-Storey Flats Type-4 in DIZ Area's Sector-4 at Raja Bazaar at Gol Market in New Delhi, be excluded from the redevelopment project. 

The Residential Welfare Association officials said that the building was newly constructed in 2017 and is currently in good condition, the statement said.

In addition, issues related to the cleanliness, maintenance, and other civic amenities of the area's parks were also raised with the NDMC Vice President .

Chahal directed officials to inspect local issues and ensure timely necessary action. 

He said that regular communication with the Residential Welfare Association and local residents helps understand the actual needs of the area and makes addressing civic issues more effective.

Officials and employees from the New Delhi Municipal Council's Civil, Electricity, Health, and Horticulture departments were present at the event.
