Chandigarh, October 11, 2019: The Criminal Justice Practicum Cell (CJPC), University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh triumphantly organized an educational trip to Central Jail, Patiala on 11th October 2019.
It was organized under the aegis of Prof. (Dr.) Rattan Singh, Director, UILS and under the stewardship of Dr. Anju Choudhary, Assistant Professor (Law), Faculty Co-ordinator, CJPC. The students gathered first-hand experience on the life of prisoners and the role of jails and correctional institutions in the criminal justice system by interacting with the prisoners and the staff on a one-on-one basis. They were educated about active Legal Aid Clinic for the prisoners where any of them could avail free legal aid if it was beyond their capacity to engage a lawyer. Also, students were informed about vocational and rehabilitation programmes being carried out within the jail premises. Further the students paid a visit to barracks as well as the women ward and the high security ward. Apart from these, the students also visited the factories within the jail premises where detainees worked and earned employment for themselves. The sources of entertainment provided to the inmates helped lighten the mood and students found them to be quite amusing.
