Drug Prevention and Treatment Month observed at DMCH

Ludhiana, December 1, 2022: Department of Psychiatry, DMCH organized various activities to commemorate ‘Drug Prevention and Treatment Month’ including central session for Resident Doctors, issues regarding Drug awareness and Mental Health was also discussed during National Undergraduate Medical Conference (NUMCON), free De-addiction Camp in De Addiction camp at DMCH and at its Rural Health Centre Pohir.

During these camps, awareness sessions were also conducted in which large number of people participated and they shared their views and encouraged the other people to raise awareness about drug usage and its treatment.

In his message, Secretary DMCH Managing Society, Prem Kumar Gupta appreciated the efforts of Department of Psychiatry to conduct these activities and emphasised the urgent need to raise public awareness about drug usage.

Dr Sandeep Puri, Principal DMCH said that drug abuse can have a major impact on some one’s life, so it is important to talk about it and promptly prevent it.

According to Dr Ranjive Mahajan, Professor & Head Department of Psychiatry, drug use disorder can be prevented in the same way as any other illness through timely consultation and by spreading public awareness among the masses. De Addiction Centre at DMCH has state of the art facilities for treating these patients and people are not aware that substance abuse is an illness that requires treatment and with the help of proper treatment a person can have a normal life, highlighted Dr Mahajan.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Navkiran Mahajan, Professor Department of Psychiatry De Addiction is a disorder that affects person’s brain and behaviour and leads to an inability to control the use of a legal or illegal drug or illicit substance and Medication has a crucial role in treating the condition. Further Dr Mahajan stated that, awareness among the masses played a big role to treat this illness.
