Dr Sanjeev Mahajan addresses National Orthopaedic Advisory Committee

Ludhiana, July 30, 2014: Dr.Sanjeev Mahajan, Director, Department Of Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana addressed the National Orthopaedic Advisory Committee’s meeting held at Mumbai recently.  
The only orthopaedician from North India to be invited for addressing an illustrious gathering, Dr Mahajan talked about ways to tackle fatal problems of blood clot blocking uptake of oxygen during hip or knee replacement surgeries or treating fractures.
Submitting the plan that he has adopted at Fortis Hospital Ludhiana for the safety and well being of patients, Dr Mahajan said that high safety standards are put to use for ensuring complete wellness of patients, every procedure should be adhered to and best quality implants and other things should be used during surgeries.
He warned against practice of some centers to cut cost of surgeries by compromising with safety of the patient and by not prescribing these preventive measures.
Addressing the committee, which gathers eminent orthopaedic doctors across the country to devise safety standards, Dr Mahajan said known as Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) the problem occurs during major orthopaedic surgery involving lower part of body, like knees or hips etc. “When part of a clot formed in a deep vein, for example in the leg is carried to the lung via the heart, preventing the uptake of oxygen. This is known as a pulmonary embolism (PE), an event which can be rapidly fatal. Blood clots, which obstruct blood flow in deep veins or in the lungs are major killer during such surgeries. At this meet, the doctors devised ways to prevent such happenings,” he said.
