Mohali , May 26: Dr Deepak Puri, Exe Dir & Head- Cardiac Sciences at Ivy Hospital, Mohali have been felicitated by Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons at Rohtak on Sunday for his contribution in continue medical education. Dr Puri was felicitated during a 2-day conference on "Achieving new heights of excellence in cardiovascular surgery through emerging technology ." Later speaking at conference, Dr Puri said that though technological advances have made outcome of adverse events much better but this involves expensive infrastructure and equipment. He emphasized the need to balance technological advances with appropriate prevention, timely interventions and proper rehabilitation to be delivered by highly skilled experts working in an integrated manner for improving the healthcare delivery for better future. More than 30 leading cardiovascular surgeons along with 200 delegates from India and abroad participated in the conference. He further said, technology is advancing rapidly and this has improved the results of cardiovascular interventions drastically in the last decade . However the burden of heart disease patients is rapidly rising and by 2020 India is going to be the capital of coronary artery disease, he pointed out. Dr Puri who is also a global Chairman of Cardiomersion strongly supported integrated approach to deliver comprehensive cost effective cardiovascular disease management. “Today the entire focus is only restricted to need based interventions most of the times in emergency situations which result in more complications and curative treatment is impossible.” There is a need to cover the entire spectrum of managing lifestyle diseases giving due emphasis to primordial and primary prevention rather than waiting for disaster to strike. As 80% of such events are preventable, we need to identify our individual risk factors earlier to avoid life threatening complications requiring expensive interventions, maintained Dr Puri.
