Ludhiana, April 26, 2014: Dr Baldev  Singh  Aulakh (Professor of Urology and Head of Transplant Unit, DMCH) and Member of Executive committee, Medical Council of India, was recently invited as the chief guest for the convocation ceremony of medical and dental  college graduates of Adesh University, Bathinda.

Addressing an audience of more than 1000 which included over 200 medical and dental students, their parents and teachers Dr Aulakh first congratulated the students,  who were receiving degrees, awards and prizes for the various academic excellence. He then emphasized that young graduates have talent, skill & knowledge which can spearhead improvements in health care system in India. They are India’s aspirations to stand shoulder¬ to¬ shoulder with the giants.

He focused on learning cutting-edge technology and also encouraged the young graduates to apply common sense clinical skills and simple technology for the poor and needy. Present youth is better equipped to create a knowledge based and technology ¬driven society. But they need to use this technology for cost effective treatment to make this within reach of common poor patients. Already many doctors and hospital have done so. To name a few:

 * Jaipur foot¬ irrigation piping

 * Ph paper color change to detect infection in ICU patients

 * A Cornea can be used for than one transplant patient.

 * Cheap anti –tuberculosis drug has been synthesized.

 Being Past Vice President of Indian Society Of Organ Transplant & Founder and President of NGO- GLODAS, Dr Aulakh emphasized that people should donate organs of the brain dead patients  & discuss the issue with their near & dear ones. Brain dead patients are different from natural death as in these patients their heart remains  functional. Vital organs can be retrieved in suchpatients if people give their consent before their death . This practice is very prevalent in developed countries like USA, UK and other parts of the world and has high success rates post transplant.

Dr Aulakh encouraged students to be ethical and true to them self and their patients. He advised  not to treat  under any pressure and  avoid unwanted treatments whether test, medication , procedure or surgery is concerned. One must not go wrong way even if you are tempted to do so.
