Ludhiana, September 16, 2019: Dr Arun Mitra to deliver address in the main Plenary at Astana, Kazakhstan in the' International Scientific Practical Conference' dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of "Nevada Semey" International Anti-Nuclear movement.
His talk will be on "Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons- Possibilities and Perspectives of Prevention". He will represent as Co-President of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW).
It is to be noted here that Kazakhstan had maximum nuclear detonations in 1970s and early 1980s. These had serious detrimental impact on health of the people. The Kazakhstan Anti Nuclear movement build strong public opinion against these and the government banned any nuclear test in 1991. Since then Kazakhstan is a nuclear weapons free zone. This international meet is of great importance today when there are several low level conflicts going around the world and any escalation in these could lead to larger wars where use of nuclear weapons may not be ruled out. South Asia is at particular risk and rhetoric by both Pakistan and India is making the situation worse and vulnerable. Any use of nuclear weapons would be catastrophic, said, Swaroop Singh, Office Secretary IDPD, in a statement here today.
