Rohtak, September 2, 2026: Media has a crucial role in strengthening democracy and must remain independent, impartial, sensitive and accountable, said MDU journalism professor and Director of Public Relations Sunit Mukherjee while delivering a special lecture at Baba Mastnath University (BMU).
Speaking on “Role of Media in Democracy”, organised by the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Mukherjee said the media’s primary responsibility is to bring truth before the public and strengthen democratic awareness.
Expressing concern over the spread of fake news in the digital era, he urged students not to become “members of WhatsApp University” and stressed the need to verify information before forwarding it. He termed media literacy and fact-checking essential in the digital age.
Sunit Mukherjee also urged students to get their voter IDs made and exercise their franchise in every election. He said an informed citizenry is the hallmark of a strong democracy. Citizens can also act as citizen journalists in the digital era, but responsibility and factual accuracy must remain paramount.
Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Brahm Prakash welcomed the participants and highlighted the context of the lecture. Dr Sonika conducted the programme, while Dr Nisha proposed the vote of thanks. Faculty members, students and research scholars from Political Science, Public Administration and Journalism departments attended the lecture.
