To mark a significant advancement in neurological care, DMC&H is soon to initiate level 2 epilepsy surgery with the aim to enhance treatment options and improving outcomes for patients with epilepsy.

Ludhiana, March 28, 2024: Dayanand Medical College & Hospital has one of the most well-established and high volume comprehensive programs for epilepsy in North India. To mark a significant advancement in neurological care, DMC&H is soon to initiate level 2 epilepsy surgery with the aim to enhance treatment options and improving outcomes for patients with epilepsy.

The team comprises Dr Gagandeep Singh, Professor & Head Department of Neurology, Dr Ashwani K Chaudhary Professor & Head Department of Neurosurgery, Dr Hanish Bansal, Associate professor Neurosurgery and Dr Jatinder Singh Goraya, Professor Paediatric Neurology, Dr Kavita Saggar, Professor & Head Radiology, Dr Puneet Bhutani and Dr Dinesh Kaushal Consultant Nuclear Medicine, Dr Parveen Goyal, Neuropsychologist, Dr Shaveta Batta, Chief Dietician, Dr Ranjit Kour Epilepsy Specialist Nurse.

In his message, Bipin Gupta, Secretary DMC&H Managing Society said that level 2 epilepsy surgery will be milestone in the treatment of epilepsy, offering patients hope for better seizure control, improved quality of life as DMC&H is always committed to provide comprehensive and innovative healthcare solutions to our community.

Dr Gagandeep Singh, Professor & head Department of Neurology said that Epilepsy is very common with a prevalence of 5- 10 per 1000 people. The standard treatment of epilepsy is anti seizure medications. There, however, can control seizures in roughly 50% cases. In nearly 30% seizures fail to response to medications. Brain surgery, neuromodulation and ketogenic diet are options in such cases. The decision to perform surgery is based on a number of tests: including   Long term video EEEG telemetry, High strength Epilepsy protocol MRI, Nuclear imaging scans such as PET and SPECT and Neuropsychology assessments.
 
Further, Dr. Gagandeep Singh highlighted that DMC&H has all the above facilities and expert in each of the above area. At the end, all of the investigations, the experts get together in a multidisciplinary approach to take decision about surgery.

Epilepsy comprehensive epilepsy care unit at DMC&H provides a range of medical and surgical treatments for epilepsy in adults, older people and children. DMC&H has successfully 79 epilepsy surgeries and conducted 1617 video EEG procedure.
