DMC&H observes World Stroke Day

Ludhiana, October 30, 2023: In continuation of the celebration of World Stroke Week, DMC&H observed World Stroke Day with the aim of raising awareness about stroke. This year's theme for this day is 'Together, we are greater than stroke'.

Sh. Bipin Gupta, Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society, lauded the efforts of the department to raise awareness about stroke and the importance of prompt action to save lives. He also said that one of DMC&H’s latest additions is a one-of-a-kind monoplane Neuro Cath lab, which is proving to be a boon for patients suffering from stroke.

Dr. Bishav Mohan, Head, Cardiology, and Medical Superintendent, Hero DMC Heart Institute, said that what patients need to focus on is their overall health. All the major problems start with diabetes and hypertension. That is why hypertension is called a silent killer because people are not aware they have it unless they get themselves checked. It is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a good diet and regular, low-impact exercise.

Dr. Gagandeep Singh, Professor and Head of the Department of Neurology, said that it is important that every person be able to recognise the symptoms of stroke. These symptoms can be recognised early by anyone by remembering the acronym FAST, which stands for F-face weakness or numbness; A-arm weakness or numbness; S-speech problems; and T-time. Anyone who experiences the above symptoms should report to the emergency department of a stroke-ready hospital so that he or she may be given the required clot-busting medicine, if applicable.

Dr. Dhananjay Gupta, Assistant Professor, said DMC&H is a completely stroke-ready hospital in Ludhiana District. He informed the general public about interventions in stroke and mechanical thrombectomy. He further added that even within 24 hours, we have a window to perform intervention procedures and remove the brain clots or do stenting for brain arteries to ensure minimal damage to the brain.

Dr. Rajinder Bansal, Professor, Department of Neurology, said the winter season increases the rate of stroke as cold weather makes blood vessels shrink, which can increase blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for stroke.

Dr. Naveen Mittal, Professor and Head of Endocrinology, explained the effects of diabetes on organ health and why it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle to keep one's blood sugar in check.

Dr. Monika Singla, Professor, Department of Neurology, highlighted the importance of rehabilitation following stroke. Rehabilitation, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, plays an important part in reducing the disability due to stroke.

Dr. Sanjeev Rawat, a yoga consultant, held a yoga session for the patients and attendants in the OPD.
