Ludhiana, May 5, 2026: Demonstrating exceptional clinical excellence, coordination, and commitment to save lives successfully performed two cadaveric liver transplants within a span of 48 hours, including a first-of-its-kind combined liver and kidney transplant in the region.
First Incident: In-House Cadaveric Donation Leads to Dual Organ Transplant
A 57-year-old female from Ludhiana, who sustained severe injuries in a roadside accident, was admitted to DMC&H on 22nd April 2026. Despite all possible medical interventions, she was declared brain dead on 24th April 2026.
In a remarkable act of humanity, her family consented to organ donation. The process was facilitated and sensitively guided by Dr. P. L. Gautam, Head of Critical Care Medicine and his team, who played a pivotal role in counseling and motivating the family.
Her organs were retrieved with utmost dignity and respect. In a landmark achievement, her liver and one kidney were transplanted into a single recipient, a 50-year-old male from SBS Nagar suffering from both liver and kidney failure—marking a rare and first combined liver–kidney cadaveric transplant in the region. Her second kidney was transplanted into another patient in Ludhiana.
The liver transplant and organ retrieval were led by Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota, Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon, along with his dedicated liver transplant team. The kidney transplant procedure was successfully performed by the team led by Dr. Vikas Kumar.
Second Incident: Swift Inter-City Organ Retrieval and Transplant
In a parallel case, a 22-year-old male from SBS Nagar, who met with a roadside accident on 22nd April 2026, was admitted to Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. He was declared brain dead on 25th April 2026.
Following consent from his family for organ donation, a highly coordinated effort was initiated. A transplant team from DMC&H, led by Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota, immediately traveled to Chandigarh to retrieve the liver. The organ was transported back to Ludhiana via a green corridor in approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, showcasing seamless inter-institutional coordination and rapid response.
Meanwhile, the recipient team at DMC&H had already prepared a 52-year-old male patient from Tarn Taran suffering from advanced liver cirrhosis. The liver transplant surgery was performed promptly upon arrival of the organ.
Both recipients are currently recovering well, reflecting the success of these complex procedures.
Bipin Gupta, Secretary, DMC&H Managing Society said that this achievement reflects DMC&H’s commitment to advanced patient care and the expertise of our medical teams. We also sincerely thank the donor families for their life-saving contribution.
Dr. G. S. Wander, Principal, DMC&H, stated, these successful transplants reflect our strong teamwork and high standards of patient care. We remain committed to advancing our transplant program and promoting organ donation awareness.
Speaking on the achievement, Dr. Gursagar Singh Sahota highlighted the dedication of the entire team of doctors, nurses, transplant coordinators, and support staff who worked relentlessly across both cases.
