DISTRICT LEGAL SERVICES AUTHORITY STARTS FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND PROGRAMME FOR WELFARE OF TRANSGENDERS

Ludhiana, July 26, 2018: Mr Gurbir Singh, District & Sessions Judge, Ludhiana-cum-Chairman, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) today launched first ever programme of the country that has been started for the welfare of transgenders. While addressing a seminar in this regard, Mr Gurbir Singh said that DLSA Ludhiana is the first Legal Services Authority of the country that has started a programme for the welfare of transgenders. He said that with the help of NGO’s, the transgenders would be imparted training in making pickles, chutneys, marmalade etc, besides they would also be trained for setting up their own beauty parlours.

Around 50 transgenders participated in today’s seminar, in which Mr Gurbir Singh stressed that it becomes duty of all of us to ensure that the transgenders become part of the mainstream. He said that is why DLSA Ludhiana has started this first of its kind initiative. He said that in the eyes of law, all people are equal and that is why, everyone should get equal opportunity for moving forward in life.

He informed that a free training course on setting up beauty parlour has been started by Ganga Foundation at Samrala Chowk, here. He congratulated the transgender community for coming forward for this initiative. They were also educated about their rights as per law and stated that free legal aid is provided to people from weaker sections of society. He said that the transgender community holds a special place in our society and that is why, they should come forward, study hard and lead a healthy life. He also urged them to ensure other transgenders also join DLSA Ludhiana so that they can help them as well.

Dr Gurpreet Kaur, CJM-cum-Secretary, DLSA Ludhiana said that if the transgenders face any problem, then they should bring it to the notice of DLSA and assured that all possible help would be provided to them. She said that for the above mentioned courses, there is no age limit. The entire panel of DLSA Ludhiana and Para Legal volunteers were also present on the occasion.
