Chandigarh, August 6, 2026: The Department of Statistics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organised a plantation drive on the theme "Green Therapy: Plantation as a Sustainable Strategy for Mental Well-Being". The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, students, research scholars, and non-teaching staff, who came together to plant saplings and reaffirm their commitment to environmental conservation and mental well-being.
Prof. Narinder Kumar, Chairperson, in his address, emphasised the profound connection between nature and human well-being. He remarked that spending time amidst nature, particularly during the morning hours, serves as a powerful source of positive energy, inner peace, and mental rejuvenation. He inspired the participants to care for every plant with love and responsibility, highlighting that a meaningful relationship with nature is the foundation of a healthier mind, a balanced life, and a happier future.
Dr. Anju Goyal, Event Coordinator, said that the true success of a plantation drive lies not only in planting saplings but also in nurturing them with care and responsibility. She encouraged students to protect the trees they planted, expressing hope that years later, when they return to their alma mater, these flourishing trees would stand as living memories of their student life and their contribution to a greener campus.
Adding a literary touch to the event, Monika Sood presented a Hindi poem illustrating the life lessons imparted by trees. Through her recitation, she conveyed that every falling leaf teaches us the grace of letting go, every new bud symbolises hope and new beginnings, and every mighty tree reminds us that patience is the foundation of strength and growth.
Speaking on the occasion, Riya Kainthwal, Research Scholar, highlighted the therapeutic benefits of plantation. She observed that planting and nurturing trees can help individuals cope with anxiety, stress, and depression. She emphasised that nature inspires resilience, happiness, and emotional well-being at every stage of life.
Vansh, an M.Sc. student, shared his heartfelt experience of growing trees with his parents and spoke about the emotional bond that develops while nurturing plants. He encouraged fellow students to plant trees not merely as an environmental responsibility but as lifelong companions that enrich both nature and human life.
The plantation drive concluded with a message to protect the environment and promote Green Therapy as an effective and sustainable approach to enhancing mental health and emotional well-being.
