New Delhi, July 10 (IANS) Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday appointed MLA Abhay Kumar Verma as the Chief Spokesperson of the Delhi government to ensure effective communication with the media and present the official stand on key issues.

Legislators Anil Kumar Sharma and Harish Khurana were appointed as the government's spokespersons. These appointments have come into effect immediately, said an official statement.

Chief Minister Gupta emphasised that effective public communication is a vital cornerstone of good governance in a democratic system. The appointment of the Chief Spokesperson and spokespersons will further strengthen the dialogue between the government and its citizens.

She said that the government has taken this crucial decision to further strengthen its commitment to transparent, accountable, and citizen-centric governance.

Through this mechanism, official and factual information concerning the government's policy decisions, development works, and public welfare schemes will be conveyed to citizens and the media in a time-bound manner, she said.

The public representatives appointed as the Chief Spokesperson and spokespersons will present the Delhi government's authorised stance on various contemporary issues.

They will share official information on the government's major decisions, policy initiatives, and matters of public interest, said the statement.

They will also establish effective communication with the media and provide clarifications on behalf of the government regarding facts and decisions whenever necessary.

Additionally, they will be responsible for conveying the government's perspective to the public based on authorised information from various departments, said the statement.

It will also ensure that authentic, transparent, and timely information related to governance reaches the general public in a well-organised manner. This step will reinforce the system established to provide clear and authorised information regarding the government's welfare initiatives, it said.

In another development, a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Friday at the Delhi Secretariat under the ‘Catch the Rain’ initiative, between Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the Directorate of Education, and an NGO, in the presence of the Chief Minister.

Under the agreement, a rainwater harvesting project will be implemented in 75 CM Shri Schools across Delhi. The project will be implemented under IGL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

It includes the audit and restoration of existing rainwater harvesting systems on school campuses, as well as the installation of new rooftop rainwater harvesting systems. Water conservation and environmental awareness programmes will also be organised for students and teachers, the statement said.
