Ludhiana,  February 26, 2014: Treatment for infertility is certainly a rough ride where woman and her partner not only have to face the psychological and social trauma but also the tiring trips to bigger cities. But now, the couples in Ludhiana have a big reason to cheer, as the Gaudium IVF has started a centre at 562-L, Model Town, Ludhiana, where facilities of IVF, IUI, ICSI, Embryo Freezing, Egg Freezing, Egg Donation, Donor Insemination, PESA/ TESA and Surrogacy are available.
Dr Manika Khanna, Director, Gaudium IVF said, “We have been serving couples in Delhi from across the country and always felt the need to extend the services to the neighbourhood of our visiting patients. Till now Gaudium has delivered more than 3000 babies from various parts of the country and it is our social responsibility to make such facilities available in smaller cities so as to benefit the larger population”.
Infertility problems have been a major concern in India lately especially after the recent report by World Bank which had reported 17 percent decline in fertility rates in India from the year 2000.  Although the decline in fertility rate has been quite high worldwide in the past 10 years but the maximum decline of 28% is reported from Punjab.
Earlier it was only urban areas which were most affected with infertility but recent reports highlight the rising trend of infertility in smaller cities and rural areas. Experts attribute environmental factors and lifestyle changes for increasing problem of infertility.
Elucidating upon the factors leading to rise in infertility, Dr Manika commented, “People today are widely exposed to chemicals and environmental pollutants which affect the sperm quality and quantity. The sperm quality and count in Indian males has drastically decreased in last decade which can be blamed to environmental factors, change in life and work style, like exposure to high temperature. Smoking, excessive drinking, stress and late marriages are other prominent factors which lead to decline in fertility”.
36,90,000 is the estimated population of Punjab which is infertile and that needs proper attention and medical intervention so as to prevent life crisis with invisible losses and other consequences pertaining to psychological and social aspects of the people.
