DC launches vegetable seed kit launched to promote kitchen gardening

Ludhiana, March 3, 2023: To promote kitchen gardening among the residents, Deputy Commissioner Surabhi Malik on Friday launched a special vegetable seed kit containing seeds of vegetables grown during the summer. 

On this occasion, Additional Deputy Commissioner (D) Amit Kaur Panchal, Deputy Director Horticulture Dr. Narinder Pal, Assistant Director Dr. Gurjit Singh Bal, Horticulture Development Officer Dr. Gurpreet Kaur and Maninder Singh and others were present.  

While providing information about this kit, Malik said that this kit contains seeds of vegetables such as bottle gourd, sponge gourd, bitter gourd, pumpkin, long melon, cluster beans, Tinda, cucumber, ladyfinger, and others. The cost of each kit is Rs 80 and these can be grown easily on four-marla land. 

Deputy Commissioner said that if these vegetables were grown in a planned manner, it can provide fresh vegetables for a family for six months. She said there was a need that every person stays healthy and they should consume a balanced diet nutrient-rich diet having essential protein, vitamins, etc. She said that the vegetables grown using this kit would not be only fresh but also free from pesticides. It also saves a cost of around Rs 5000 per person in expenses or vegetables.

Deputy Director Horticulture Dr Narinder Pal Kalsi said that these vegetables were rich in nutrition and healthy. He also informed that along with the seeds, this kit also includes a pamphlet containing details of ways to manage these crops in an effective manner. He said these kits could be purchased from the department’s main office or block-level offices.
