Condemning the Use of Pellet Guns on Students in Delhi Is Right, But Why the Silence Over Action Against Farmers in Punjab, asks Pargat Singh

Chandigarh, August 6, 2026: Senior Punjab Congress leader and MLA Pargat Singh has reacted to the Punjab Legislative Assembly's unanimous condemnation of the alleged use of pellet guns against protesting students in Delhi. He said that the protection of human rights and democratic freedoms should not be confined to a single incident or guided by political convenience.
Pargat Singh said that if the Assembly condemns the use of pellet guns against students, it must also explain why it has remained silent on the use of pellet guns against farmers within Punjab's borders two years ago. The government must demonstrate the same level of sensitivity toward every victim. In that incident, a young farmer lost his life, while several others suffered permanent injuries and continue to live with the consequences.
He questioned why no action has been taken so far against those responsible for ordering or carrying out the pellet gun firing on farmers. He said that the failure to register FIRs against the officials responsible raises serious questions, and that the affected families are still waiting for justice.
He further said that if the Punjab Legislative Assembly is genuinely committed to democratic values and human rights, it must speak with the same conviction whenever the rights of citizens are violated. He demanded an impartial inquiry into the action against the farmers and called for those responsible to be proceeded against in accordance with the law so that the victims' families receive justice.
