Speaking at India Today Conclave 2023, CJI Chandrachud spoke about the need to “Indianise” the judiciary in the country.

Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud spoke about the need to “Indianise” the judiciary in the country. CJI DY Chandrachud talked about his vision for the Indian judiciary during the India Today Conclave 2023 session ‘Justice in the Balance: My idea of India. And the importance of separation of powers in a democracy’.

“The first part where we have to Indianise the judiciary is the language of court. The language of discourse is not just English in district courts. But the language of discourse in higher courts, the high courts and the Supreme Court, is English. Now, that maybe a part of the colonial inheritance, or it may be because English is a language in which we have the greatest facility in terms of statutes and judgments,” DY Chandrachud said.

The CJI added, “But if we really want to reach out to citizens, we have to reach out to them in languages which they understand. And we have already started the process.”

Notably, this is the first time that a sitting Chief Justice of India has fielded questions at a live forum.
