Chandigarh, November 17, 2015: Panjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Arun Kumar Grover was today conferred with Honorary rank of Colonel Commandant in NCC. The Honorary rank of Colonel Commandant is approved by the Union Defence Minister, Government of India.
The honorary rank and certificate issued by Director General NCC, New Delhi were presented to him by Brig M G Sekaran, Sena Medal (Gallantry), Group Commander NCC Gp HQ, Chandigarh at PU VC office today. Prof Grover has been awarded the Hony Rank of ‘Colonel’ in NCC and Colonel Commandant NCC for PU, Chandigarh.
Depicting empowerment of women, PU VC Prof Arun Grover was also presented with a guard of honour by all Girl NCC cadets.
Group Commander, NCC Group Headquarters, Chandigarh, Brigadier MG Sekaran informed that in the Armed Forces, the “Colonel of the Regiment” is an honour conferred only upon distinguished and very senior officers. We are indeed very proud that such a distinguished person has been granted honorary rank of “Colonel” and appointed “Colonel Commandant NCC of Panjab University”, he added. 
Brig MG Sekaran further added that only six Vice Chancellors have been approved for the covetous rank by the Government this year and Prof Grover is the only one in the entire states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh to have been bestowed the honour.
On this occasion, PU VC Prof Grover announced that the PU has been allotted 56 vacancies of NCC for enrolling Girls Cadets. Prof Grover also announced that the provisions of separate semester examinations for NCC cadets participating in National Camps would also be made on the pattern of Sports Persons. The facility would enable the PU students to attend National camps and subsequently take semester exams after returning to the University. The issue would be brought in the upcoming PU Syndicate for appropriate decision. Brig MG Sekaran had brought out that NCC cadets are involved in preparation /training camps for Republic Day Camp during Nov/Dec each year, as a result of which they miss their semester exams. 
It may be recalled that though PU has a NCC Boys wing but no Girls Wing was earlier allotted to the university and it had been a long outstanding demand from girl students of PU for introduction of NCC Girls Wing in University since the year 2002. The
enrollment to Girls Wing of PU commenced today and 20 students were initially enrolled in NCC.
Talking about training of NCC cadets and lack of space of establishing an obstacle course, Prof Grover announced that suitable space for establishing obstacle course would be allotted to NCC in university campus shortly.
