Chandigarh News- 3 Wheelers to Promote Dignity & Safety of Girls

Chandigarh, September 30, 2013: A new innovative idea of using three-wheelers in the tricity of Chandigarh, Panchkula & SAS Nagar was adopted by city based NGO-Yuvsatta to  promote the dignity and safety of girls. And they took consent of auto unions to paste stickers promoting girls on front and back of autos to spread the message among masses.

And a huge auto rickshaw rally with all autos decorated with stickers on rights of girls was taken out here today from Post Graduate Govt College, Sector 11, Chandigarh to Govt College of Girls, Sector 42, to make people aware about the dignity and rights of girls. It was part of the ongoing 8th International Youth Peace Fest (IYPF 2013) being organized by Yuvsatta and Oxfam India, in association with the Chandigarh State Cell of NSS and Dr G C Mishra Memorial Educational & Charitable Trust.

The auto rally displaying stickers, placards and banners in support of the girl child was flagged off by David Mees, Culture Attaché, US Embassy, New Delhi. And over 250 foreign delegates from 25 countries, led by American Gandhi Bernie Meyer and a large number of volunteers from Yuvsatta and various colleges participated in the rally comprising of over 100 three wheelers. At the culmination point of Government College of Girls, Sector 42, a flash mob was also organized.

Addressing the gathering before the rally, David Mees shared that all such inspiring ideas can help in real sense the girls to realize their true potential. And when girls have safe places to meet, education, legal protection, health care, and access to training and job skills, they can thrive. And if they thrive, everyone around them thrives too. These girls are the women and mothers of the future. If left to be ignorant of their rights they are destined to be subject to abuse and discrimination.

Earlier in the day, ‘The living spirit of Mahatma Gandhi’, peace activist and youth motivator Dr S N Subba Rao addressed the young people and motivated them to take a lead for a better world. Four simultaneous sessions at different places also took place on the subjects of Volunteering, Focus on the Girl Child, Green Citizens and Peace Dialogue and Youth Aspiration.

Pramod Sharma, coordinator, Yuvsatta said, “China Day will be celebrated on 1st October with a ‘Beyond border fashion show & a multi-cultural evening’. During the day, over 1 lakh students in almost all schools of the tricity will also take a pledge to promote interfaith trust and world harmony. IYPF 2013 delegates will visit various schools for this ceremony, including Carmel Convent School, Gurukul Global School, Paragon Senior Secondary School, Sector 70, Mohali, KB DAV Sr Secondary School, Sector 7B, Saupins School, Sector 32.
