Chandigarh-Dharamshala flight service resumes after nine months

Dharamshala, April 2, 2024: After a hiatus of nine months, the air route between Chandigarh and Dharamshala welcomed its revival with the launch of Indigo Airlines' new flight service to Gaggal Airport Dharamsala on Tuesday, marking a significant boost for regional connectivity.

The much-awaited resumption of flights on this route, which had been suspended since July 2023, was inaugurated by an IndiGo flight today that departed from Chandigarh Airport at 12:54 pm, and arrived in Dharamsala at 1:28 pm.

The return journey from Dharamshala to Chandigarh saw the aircraft take off at 2:03 pm and touch  down at  Chandigarh at 2:53 pm. This resumption has been a relief for passengers who frequently travel between these two destinations, offering a much-needed alternative to the long and arduous road journey. IndiGo Airlines has now taken up the mantle to operate this route with flights scheduled three days a week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday , a service that was previously managed by Alliance Air Aviation offering daily flights.

Dhirendra Singh, Airport Authority of India Director at Dharamsala Airport, expressed optimism about the revived service, noting that Indigo's initiative is just the beginning. He revealed that SpiceJet, another major player in the aviation industry, is also planning to expand its fleet and increase the number of flights to Gaggal Airport of Dharamsala , aiming to accommodate the influx of tourists expected this season.

Currently, SpiceJet operates two flights from Delhi to Dharamsala , and with the introduction of Indigo's new service, there will be an additional flight from Chandigarh, increasing the total to three Indigo Airlines flights to Gaggal Airport. Today, Gaggal Airport saw a total of seven aircraft land, including five from Delhi, one from Shimla, and the newly introduced service from Chandigarh, signalling a significant uptick in the airport's operations and a boon for the local tourism and business sectors.
