Centre for Social Work, Panjab University Organises Awareness & Training Programme on Suicide Prevention
The Centre for Social Work, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh organised an Awareness & Training Programme on Suicide Prevention on September 11, 2026, in connection with World Suicide Prevention Day. The programme aimed to sensitise students about suicide prevention, mental health concerns and the importance of timely support and intervention.
Chandigarh, September 11, 2026: The Centre for Social Work, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh organised an Awareness & Training Programme on Suicide Prevention on September 11, 2026, in connection with World Suicide Prevention Day. The programme aimed to sensitise students about suicide prevention, mental health concerns and the importance of timely support and intervention.
Chairperson, Centre for Social Work, Prof. Monica Munjial Singh welcomed the Expert Speaker, Consultant Tele-MANAS, Department of Psychiatry, PGIMER, Chandigarh, Dr.Harrishupreet Kaur and highlighted the importance of creating awareness among young people regarding mental health and suicide prevention.
During the programme, Dr. Kaur shared relevant data on suicide, particularly in the Indian context, and discussed the symptoms and warning signs, major causes and risk factors associated with suicide. She elaborated on the importance of early identification, emotional support and timely intervention. Special emphasis was laid on the role of counselling and social workers in providing psychosocial support, identifying individuals at risk, facilitating appropriate referrals and strengthening support systems.
The interactive session provided students with an opportunity to understand suicide prevention from a professional and social work perspective. Queries raised by the students were addressed by the expert, making the programme informative and engaging.
The programme concluded with a renewed emphasis on listening, supporting and saving lives through greater awareness, empathy, counselling and timely professional intervention.
