Chandigarh, February 10, 2026: The Centre for Social Work, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organised an online webinar on “Millets for Food and Nutrition Security” on Tuesday. The session was delivered by Prof Sukhneet Suri, Vivekananda College, University of Delhi.
The resource person was warmly welcomed by Prof Monica Munjial Singh, Chairperson, Centre for Social Work, and Dr Gaurav Gaur, who highlighted the relevance of millets in addressing contemporary food and nutrition challenges.
During the lecture, Prof Sukhneet Suri highlighted that millets are traditional nutri-cereals that are climate resilient, require less water, and can grow in poor soil conditions. She emphasised their high nutritional value, including fibre, quality protein, iron, calcium and other minerals, along with a low glycaemic index and gluten-free nature.
She discussed the social significance of millets in supporting small farmers, promoting traditional diets, reducing malnutrition and anaemia, and providing affordable nutrition for economically weaker sections. The session also covered the National Food Security Act, 2013, basic food security concepts, and the potential role of millets in strengthening nutrition security and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Practical aspects of millet processing, types of millets and recipes were also shared.
The webinar concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session and highlighted millets as a sustainable solution for nutrition security and farmer welfare.
