Carotid artery stent implanted successfully

Nawanshahr, June 19, 2023: A carotid artery stent was successfully implanted in a 70 year old brain stroke male patient at Ivy Hospital, Nawanshahr recently.

Giving information, Dr Hitesh Gurjar, consultant cardiologist who performed the procedure said that the patient was suffering from dizziness and left arm weakness.
His carotid angiography showed a critical 95% stenosis in the right side of the internal carotid artery.

The carotid artery stenting (CAS) was done with embolic protection device before stenting, which is the current standard of care treatment internationally, he informed.

Talking about brain stroke,  Dr. Gurjar said that it is the second leading cause of death in India. Every year 1,85,000 strokes occur in India, with a death every 4 minutes. Carotid artery disease accounts for 20-25 percent of such cases.

Carotid artery disease can be treated with medical management, carotid artery stenting (CAS), and carotid endarterectomy (CEA), he asserted.

If the stenosis is more than 50 percent with symptoms or more than 60 percent in asymptomatic cases, then the lesion needs to be treated to improve symptoms or prevent future stroke risk, Dr Gurjar said.

CAS has emerged as an effective and safe treatment option for patients with carotid artery disease, he maintained.

Meanwhile this case highlights the importance of timely referral as in present case, availability of skill and expertise in treating such patients locally, and multidisciplinary team approach, for successful outcomes.
