Ludhiana, February 3, 2014: On the eve of World Cancer Day, a team of top doctors at the newly launched Fortis Hospital Ludhiana addressed a press conference today to talk about the myths and misconceptions that hinder efforts to prevent and reduce the increasing number of cancer cases in Ludhiana and surrounding areas.
Talking about the increasing incidence of cancer, Dr J S Sekhon, the Director of Oncology at Fortis Hospital Ludhiana, said, “Cancer is one of the biggest causes of death in every corner of the world. At the rate at which we are going, the World Health Organisation predicts that the number of cancer cases will double in merely the next 25 years.” Emphasising on the need to spread awareness about cancer, Dr Parveen Kaur, the Head of Radiation Oncology, said the heaviest burden of this monstrous increase in cancer cases would be on the developing countries. “These nations are the least prepared to detect and treat the disease,” she warned.
Dr Sekhon added, “This catastrophic scenario can be averted, but it will take determined action by the patient as well as the doctor to control the spread of the disease at the initial stage.”
Elaborating on the broad aspects of cancer and the treatment modalities, Dr Harish Matta, Head of General Surgery, said at Fortis Hospital Ludhiana, the focus is on comprehensive care whereby the entire team of Medical Oncologists, Surgeons and Radiation Oncologists endeavour to provide the most customized and integrated care to each patient. “It pains to see when even educated people ignore cancer’s symptoms and talk to the doctor only when the disease has reached stage 3 or 4. This points towards a gross lack of awareness and myths about the disease,” he said.
Announcing launch of breast clinic Dr.Harish Matta said that we are inaugurating our new speciality known as breast clinic which will provide comprehensive care for people who have breast cancer and other high-risk breast conditions. The clinic will also offer breast reconstruction service along with many others. The highlight is that the patients will be offered private counselling.
The distinguished medical forum concluded?that?there was a? need? for? a? radical? overhaul? in? cancer? control? strategies? because? too? many? people were?getting? cancers? that? could? have? been? prevented ? too?many? people were? suffering?and? dying unnecessarily? from the disease because of late detection and improper treatment. Dr Parveen said the best possible technology for treating cancer was available at Fortis, including LINAC (linear accelerator) and 3DCRT (3D Conformal Radiation Therapy where the beams of radiation are shaped to match the tumour).
The Facility Director of Fortis Hospital Ludhiana Vivan Gill said “At Fortis, we believe in providing the patients with world-class facilities along with best medical care. The Oncology Department has an expert team of doctors and is headed by Dr.J.S Sekhon who has achieved various milestones throughout his medical career and has treated numerous types of cancers, thus saving many lives.”// ludhiana news online, ludhiana news in English, ludhiana news, ludhiana current news, ludhiana news live, Ludhiana breaking news, Ludhiana headlines, Ludhiana latest news, punjab news, india news, punjab news live, punjab news online, punjab news, punjab news headlines, punjab breaking news, india news, punjab news,
