Ludhiana, December 3, 2015: DMCH, Ludhiana today organised medical camp for children with disabilities at Ekjot Viklang Children’s School, BRS Nagar. The camp catered to children with hearing impairment, mental retardation and locomotor disabilities. Children in pre-primary classes were also examined in the camp. Dr Deepak Bhat. Professor of Pediatrics examined the children. In his message, Dr Bhat said India has around 12 million children living with disabilities. Only 1% of children with disabilities have access to school and one third of most disabilities are preventable. Under-nutrition is a severe problem with children who suffer from cerebral palsy, said Dr Bhat. A total of 75 children were examined during the camp.
The main causes of disability in children are:- Communicable disease, Infection in early childhood, Early motherhood, Nutritional deficiencies and Insufficient or inaccessible health care services
Many of the causes of disability are preventable by providing expecting mothers with better prenatal and post natal care as well as proper nutrition for infants and mothers.
