Khanna (Ludhiana), May 4, 2026: Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond on Monday dedicated a newly constructed model playground in Turmuri village, fulfilling a promise made to local residents. Built at a cost of Rs 13.30 lakh, the facility is part of the Punjab government’s larger initiative to promote sports infrastructure across rural areas.
Addressing the gathering, Sond described the project of developing more than 3,100 model playgrounds worth Rs 1250 crores as a visionary step by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to channelize the energy of youth in a positive direction and provide them with meaningful opportunities for growth.
The Minister said the Turmuri playground is equipped with modern amenities including volleyball and boxing facilities, a walking track, swings for children, and proper lighting, making it a comprehensive recreational space for all age groups. Out of 3100 these, 250 playgrounds have been dedicated to the public. All the remaining modern sports grounds will be completed by July 2026, providing a new direction for the youth of Punjab to stay healthy and excel in the field of sports. He emphasized that the government is working to ensure that every village in Punjab has access to such well-developed playgrounds, which will not only promote physical fitness but also strengthen community engagement.
Highlighting the state government’s commitment to tackling drug abuse, Sond stated that creating sports infrastructure is a key strategy to keep youth away from drugs by engaging them in constructive and healthy activities. He termed the initiative a “dream project” of the AAP government and said that the inauguration in Turmuri marks just the beginning of fulfilling promises made to the people.
Sond stated the initiative will lay the foundation for a sports revolution in Punjab. “Our aim is not just to set up playgrounds, but to build a healthier, stronger, and more confident Punjab. These grounds will nurture future athletes and responsible citizens,” he added. He assured that the government will continue to monitor the quality and maintenance of these facilities to ensure long-term benefits for rural communities.
Sond also handed over a grant of Rs 3 lakh to the panchayat for the repair of the village cremation ground. On this occasion, he also planted a sapling in the sports ground to promote environmental cleanliness. He also distributed sports kits to players. He also visited the memorial of Kargil martyr Harjinder Singh Raji and paid floral tributes.
