Chandigarh, September 1, 2026: Senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa launched a sharp attack on the Shiromani Akali Dal, saying that by allegedly extending behind-the-scenes support to the ABVP in the university elections, the Akali Dal has exposed its true face before the people of Punjab. He said that a party which for years claimed to be the foremost representative of Panthic politics now appears to be seeking BJP’s support to safeguard its political existence.
Randhawa alleged that whenever the question of power or political gains arises, the Akali Dal never hesitates to change its earlier stand. Punjab will never accept such alliances where there is a difference between words and actions.
Randhawa said that Sukhbir Singh Badal has now realised that winning the trust of the people of Punjab on his own is not easy. This, he said, is why the Akali Dal once again appears to be trying to move closer to the BJP. He said that this is the same BJP from which the Akali Dal had claimed to distance itself during the farmers’ agitation, but is now allegedly sending a message of standing alongside the same party in electoral politics.
He said that the Akali Dal had risen to prominence on the strength of Panthic votes, but the same Panthic vote bank now appears to be steadily moving away from it. The people of Punjab have understood that the Akali Dal gives greater priority to political convenience than to its principles.
He said that the Congress will continue to stand firmly with the trust of the people of Punjab and with the voices of farmers, youth and Punjabiyat. Meanwhile, the growing proximity between the Akali Dal and the BJP proves that the focus of the politics of both parties is no longer Punjab, but saving their own political existence.
