Budget for cultural and heritage fairs increased from Rs 5 crores to Rs 100 crores: Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond

Khanna/ Ludhiana, February 24, 2026: Cabinet Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond stated on Tuesday that prior to 2022, the budget for organizing cultural and heritage fairs in Punjab was a mere Rs 5 crores but under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, this has been significantly increased to Rs 100 crores to revive and promote the state’s rich traditional legacy.
Addressing the gathering during the Punjab Sakhi Shakti Mela-2026, Sond emphasized that cultural fairs serve as a vital bridge between ancient traditions and modern life. These events not only unite communities and strengthen social bonds but also generate employment opportunities and ensure Punjab’s vibrant heritage is passed down to future generations. He criticized previous governments for neglecting these fairs, which he said had led to a gradual fading of cultural awareness among the people. However, since the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government came to power in 2022, cultural melas have been revitalized with substantial financial support, breathing new life into Punjab’s traditions, music, cuisine, and heritage.
The Minister informed that the Punjab Sakhi Shakti Mela-2026 focused on women empowerment, entrepreneurship, and cultural promotion—has become a shining example of this renewed commitment. Organized with enthusiasm at Dussehra Ground, the Mela features stalls by skilled women artisans and entrepreneurs from Punjab and beyond, alongside vibrant performances and exhibitions.
Sond appealed to the people of Punjab to visit this Mela, running until March 2, with their families to enjoy shopping, various programs, and festivities. He said that these fairs are not just a means of entertainment but a major platform for keeping Punjabi culture alive.
During the third night star of the ‘Punjab Sakhi Shakti Mela’, famous Punjabi singer Khan Bhaini made the audience dance with his hit songs.
Every evening, tunes of Punjabi folk, contemporary, and Sufi music are making the Mela atmosphere even more vibrant. Local handicrafts, food stalls, and cultural exhibitions are specially attracting people.
