Ludhiana, August 23, 2013: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) workers held a massive protest today against pathetic condition of National Highway road and bridge over the Sutlej river, near Phillaur.

Protestors included Ramanjit Lalli, municipal councillors Ashok Kumar and Hans Raj and the party’s former district president Mohinder Singh Dhandari. They shouted slogans against the concerned construction company and National Highway Authority of India, for allegedly causing undue delay in completion of the ongoing work of construction of the six lane road on this highway.

Vehicular traffic for about 60 minutes was badly interrupted by the protestors. As a result, commuters have to face a great difficulty.

On receiving the information, civil and police administrative officers rushed to the spot. They managed to pacify the protestors about an hour following which the road passage was cleared. Protestors were assured that the remaining work of construction of the road would be started by September 1.

Protestors did strong verbal arguments with the administrative officers. They said they were writing to the local administration for the last a couple of months, adding it seemed as if the administration is waiting for a major mishap to occur. They recalled that a child had lost his life after while passing over the bridge about two months ago. They regretted that heavy road taxes were charged from commuters but nothing was done as far as services were concerned.

They also regretted that rain water was stagnant at various places along the road from Shambhu to Jalandhar, resulting to which accidents were taking place.

Protestors warned that if the administration failed to get started the work from September 1 onwards as has been assured to them then they would be constrained to let people not to pay toll tax at the barrier.

They sought that medial, mobile vans, toilets and pure drinking water facilities be provided on the National Highway.
