Ludhiana, May 8, 2025: In a remarkable display of medical excellence and compassion, Aykai Hospital, Ludhiana has successfully performed a second kidney transplant on a young female patient suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). The patient had previously undergone her first kidney transplant in 2019, with her mother as the donor. Unfortunately, the graft failed, and she had to be restarted on dialysis, marking a particularly challenging phase in her life.
Hope was rekindled when her sister-in-law’s father (Devrani’s father) came forward as a voluntary kidney donor. However, the blood group of patient was not matching with the donor which initially posed a major hurdle . The family, overwhelmed and unsure of their options, approached Aykai Hospital where they consulted Dr. Baldev Singh Aulakh, Chief Urologist and Transplant Surgeon, and Chairman of Aykai Hospital.
Dr. Aulakh reassured the family, explaining that Aykai Hospital is equipped with advanced transplant techniques, including the ability to perform ABO-incompatible (ABOi) transplants, where the donor of different blood group donates organ to recipient having different blood groups.
"Performing a second transplant in a female patient—who is sensitized and has already undergone a failed transplant—makes the case highly complex. Adding an ABO-incompatible donor and the fact that he was a non-related donor further increased the challenge," said Dr. Aulakh. "However, with thorough medical evaluation, desensitization protocols, and all necessary legal permissions, the transplant was successfully carried out by the team of highly skilled doctors under the canopy of Dr Baldev singh Aulakh and Dr Vivekanand Jha (Nephrologist)along with Dr Amit Tuli Consultant Urology, Dr Gourav Mittal ,Dr Naresh Lodhi and Dr Himanshu Sharma(DNB Residents)."
The surgery was completed smoothly and the patient is recovering well, thanks to the expertise of the transplant team and the state-of-the-art infrastructure at Aykai Hospital.
This case not only highlights the hospital's cutting-edge transplant capabilities, but also reflects the selflessness of organ donors and the importance of awareness regarding living donation, even in challenging scenarios.
At Aykai Hospital, we remain committed to delivering advanced, ethical, and patient-centered care, ensuring that no life is left behind due to medical limitations.
