BJP Playing Politics Over Corpses: Kang Slams Sunil Jakhar for Exploiting Majitha Tragedy

Chandigarh, May 19, 2025: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Malvinder Singh Kang today strongly criticized BJP Punjab President Sunil Jakhar for using the tragic deaths caused by spurious liquor in Majitha for political gain instead of addressing the root cause. Kang stated, “It is unfortunate that to establish himself within the BJP, Jakhar has stooped to politics over dead bodies. His position within his party seems so fragile that he resorts to shallow rhetoric rather than serious solutions.”

Kang highlighted that the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, took swift and decisive action in the matter. Within six hours, multiple officials, including contractors, excise officers, and police personnel, were held accountable. He revealed that 16 arrests have been made, with the culprits apprehended even from Delhi. “Chief Minister Mann’s directive is crystal clear - no one involved will be spared,” Kang affirmed.

Turning the spotlight on the availability of methanol, Kang said it is the central government’s responsibility to regulate its supply, which remains alarmingly accessible across India. "Methanol is a national concern, not just a Punjab issue. The availability of such dangerous substances must be strictly controlled," he said. Kang added that Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema had already written to the central government, urging for stricter guidelines and a national policy to regulate the sale and distribution of methanol.

AAP Senior Spokesperson Neel Garg pointed out the Jakhar’s hypocrisy, noting that Sunil Jakhar was part of the Congress government in 2020 when 154 lives were lost to spurious liquor in Tarn Taran. “Where was his moral outrage then? AAP had to hold protests demanding justice for those victims. Today, Jakhar conveniently ignores the role of the central government in methanol regulation and instead politicizes a tragedy,” Garg remarked.

Garg added that If Jakhar is truly serious about the issue, he should urge his BJP-led central government to prioritize Punjab’s demands for stricter methanol regulation and address the larger issue at hand.
