Awareness amongst farmers and villagers against vices of stubble burning
Jalandhar, October 4, 2019: The NSS Wing of Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar along with 40 volunteers and teachers visited Raipur, Rasulpur, Mokha, Samastpur, Randhawe, Masanda, Balan, Salarpur, Daulatpur, Khusropur and other neighboring villages to generate awareness amongst the farmers and villagers against the vices of stubble burning. An environment protection drive initiated by Punjab Government in collaboration with colleges took the charge to take steps in order to protect the environment from deteriorating due to increasing Air Pollution. Every year 35 million tonnes of straw is produced in Northern India in September and October and most of it is burned. A direct consequence of this is visible in cities such as New Delhi which was ranked as having the worst air quality in the world in 2018. The NSS team interacted with the farmers in villages and tried to convince them to choose other options rather than burning as this leads to environment degradation. They told them about the new research published in the journal Science that finds that using Happy Seeder – a machine that can sow wheat in the presence of rice straw is profitable for farmers and can also help the environment. After doing the necessary surveys and collecting data, the researchers found that using the Happy Seeder can lead to a nearly 10-20% increase in farmer’s profits on average. Such practices can reduce agriculture’s contribution to India’s greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to better health by reducing air pollution. The villagers were also highlighted about the rules and schemes which Government have for them against the practice of Stubble Burning. Principal Dr.Sucharita Sharma was glad to see students enthusiastically contributing in Environment Protection Rally. She put forth such involvement and practices make students responsible and well aware citizens of nation. She also appreciated Dr. Apra, NSS Dean for guiding the students in contributing towards this noble cause.
