Chandigarh, September 2, 2026: Former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Member of Parliament Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa strongly condemned the alleged brutal assault by drug smugglers on police constable in Gurdaspur, in which his legs were reportedly broken. He said the incident proves that the drug mafia in Punjab has become so emboldened that even police personnel are no longer safe.
Randhawa said that the drug situation in Punjab is going from bad to worse. Drug trafficking continues unabated in the border areas, but the government has completely failed to break the supply chain. He said that when drug smugglers are attacking police personnel responsible for enforcing the law, one can easily imagine the level of security being provided to ordinary citizens.
He demanded that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann take the strictest possible action against those responsible for the Gurdaspur attack. He said the government must immediately take concrete steps to dismantle the entire drug trafficking network. Drug abuse cannot be eradicated, nor can its supply chain be broken, merely by launching campaigns or publicising advertisements. He alleged that the deteriorating law and order situation has already become a major headache for the government.
He said this is not merely an allegation by the Opposition; Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan himself has publicly admitted that the state government has failed to fulfil its guarantee of eliminating drugs. Randhawa questioned that when the government's own senior functionaries are acknowledging its failure, who will ultimately take responsibility?
Randhawa said that the fact that nearly half of the prisoners and undertrial inmates lodged in Punjab's jails are reportedly addicted to drugs is a serious indication that the drug menace has spread deep into the roots of society. Despite this, the government is making only claims, while the network of drug traffickers continues to grow stronger. The government must answer to the people of Punjab on this issue. The people of Punjab are now ready to hold the Aam Aadmi Party accountable.
